In ancient times oracles were very common. Oracles were a source of wise and/or prophetic counsel.

In ancient India it was Akashwani, in ancient Greece the Delphic Oracle, in Nigeria the Igbo people consulted their, usually female, priestesses and in Tibet oracles not only used to play an important role, but they still do today. Even the Dalai Lama consults the Nechung Oracle, which is the official oracle of Tibet.
